Geographic Tour of Western Uganda

DAY 1: KAMPALA – FORT PORTAL

Early in the morning depart for Fort Portal Town with a brief stopover at the Nakayima Tree on Mubende Hill along the Kampala Fort Portal Highway.

Travel Distance from Kampala: 181 KM

Travel Distance from Mubende Town: 3.8 KM.

On arrival, a local guide will take you through the rich history of this place and later depart for Fort Portal. Check in to your hotel is foreseen in the early afternoon. After check in, have lunch, recuperate from the journey as you make your trip notes.

Overnight in Fort Portal.

DAY 2: TOUR OF FORT PORTAL

Fort Portal town which is perhaps the most attractive town in Uganda, situated amidst lush rolling hills, swathed in neat tea plantations, and offering excellent views across to the glacial peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Today is a busy day with plenty to see. Get your note book, camera and binoculars ready to feast your eyes. The beauty is breath taking.

Take a lunch break and spend the rest of the evening at Leisure.

DAY 3: FORT PORTAL –QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

Early in the morning depart for Queen Elizabeth via Kasese-Mbarara road. Along the way you will a stopoverat Queens Pavilion and Equator.

Travel Distance from Fort Portal: 120. 6 KM

On arrival in Queen Elizabeth National Park check in you lodge have lunch and go to Lake Katwe in the afternoon

TOURING LAKE KATWE.

  1. Katwe is one of the crater lakes that was formed as a result of volcanicity. It’s famous for salt mining.

What to expect

  • You will be taken through the process of salt mining by a local village guide
  • Bird watching mostly the interesting seasonal birds i.e. less flamingoes that come all a long from Kenya among other birds.
  • Interaction with the indigenous people

Return to the lodge and relax until the next day

OVERNIGHT: At your lodge in Queen Elizabeth National park 

DAY 4: GAME DRIVE& LAUNCH CRUISE ON KAZINGA CHANNEL

Early in the morning after your breakfast, you will go for the game drive deep in the park.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in Western Uganda on the border with DRC Congo. It is the second biggest National park in Uganda 1978km squire and one of Uganda’s most varied and lovely protected areas. Its location is superb on the floor of the Albertine Rift valley at the foot of the snow –capped Rwenzori Mountain between Lake Edward and George.

What to expect;

  • 612 bird species which include the water birds, swamp birds and forest birds like the African fish eagle, yellow billed stork, variety of beautiful king fishers, among others.
  • Primates like the Olive baboons, Black and white colobus monkeys and others
  • Cats like lions, Leopard, Serval etc.
  • Canid like side stripped jackal
  • Civets, Genets and mongooses, spotted hyenas.
  • African elephants, Hippos, Buffaloes, warthogs. Giant forest hogs among others.

After wards, head to Maramagambo Forest.

Situated in Southern part of Queen Elizabeth Park from the escarpment of Kichwamba all through to Lake Edward.Maramagambo forest is one of the biggest natural forests in Uganda. You will be told all about the forest by the local guide

After the boat head to Kyambura Gorge /Maramagambo forest

LAUNCH CRUISE A LONG KAZINGA CHANNEL

You will have a relish boat cruise along the Kazinga channel which connects l. George and L. Edward where you will see more of the wild animals as they come down to water to cool off.  Enjoy the unique boat cruise on the Channel to the mouth of Lake Edward. This cruise passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos in the country and offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing.The prolific bird life is colorfuland remarkable with well over 612 species.

Return at your lodge and spent the rest of evening at leisure

DAY 5: QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK – LAKE BUNYONYI

After your yummy breakfast check out and head to Lake Bunyonyi via Kitaga hot spring with enroutes stopover in Ishaka for lunch

On arrival check in your lodge and spend the rest of the evening at leisure

DAY 6: HIGHLIGHTS OF LAKE BUNYONYI

Lake Bunyonyi is the second deepest lake in Africa after Lake Tanganyika .The deepest point of Lake Bunyonyi is 900m

After checking in, you will have you lunch and engage in cultural visits through the communities of Lake Bunyonyi.

  • Bakora cave & the Abaheesi (traditional Blacksmiths)
  • Swimming in the safest Lake Bunyonyi as you relax after this first adventure.

DAY 7: LAKE BUNYONYI TO MUHAVURA VOLCANOES

Early in the morning after your breakfast you will head off to Muhavura Volcanoes which is along Kabale –Kisoro road only a 2 hours’ drive.

Mount Muhavura, is an extinct volcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and Uganda. It is the third highest of the eight major mountains of the mountain range, at 4,127 metres (13,540 ft.) .The mountain is within the  Albertine Rift, of the western branch of the East African Rift. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park covering 33.7km, sitting high in the clouds, at an altitude of between 2,227m and 4,127m.The Park was created to protect the rare mountain gorillas that inhabit its dense forests, and it is also an important habitat for the endangered golden monkey with 76 mammal species and 179-184 bird species.

Mgahinga’s most outstanding features are its three conical, extinct volcanoes, part of the spectacular Virunga Range that lies along the border region of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. DAY 8: AT LEISURE /PERSONAL NATURE WALKS

Early in the morning after you breakfast you will go for a nature walk within the park and this can take 4-5 hours.

What to expect;

  • Gisozi hill, look out for Kisoro and Bunagana towns and be charmed by Lake Mutanda.
  • Sabinyo Gorge.
  • Three conical, extinct volcanoes. Return to you lodge for lunch and do optional actives

DAY 9: Mgahinga Gorilla National – LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

Early in the morning after your breakfast check out and start your journey to Lake Mburo which is a 6 hour drive via Kabale –Mbarara road

Lake Mburo National Park

Mburo National Park is conveniently located close to the Kampala-Mbarara highway with a gem of wildlife in the middle of an extensive rich acacia woodland. The park is home to 332 bird species including the rare African fin foot, shoebill, papyrus gonolek, yellow warbler, saddle billed stork, brown chested wattle, plover among others.

On arrival you will check in, have your lunch and the go for the launch cruise

Launch cruiseis for approximately 2 hrs. And from here you will be able to watch more animals together with water birds as many come down the lake during the afternoon hours for water & cooling off. Here you will spot the African fin foot, king fishers, fish eagles among others including reptiles like crocodiles and some snakes.

After your launch cruise you will have an opportunity to engage in some optional activities like horseback rides through the park.

DAY 10: GAME DRIVE AND DEPARTURE

Travel distance from Lake Mburo 235 KM

Early in the morning after breakfast, you will go for a game drive in the woodland acacia. Expect a variety of flora and fauna which includes zebras, Roth’s child giraffes, elephants, elands, topis, and by chance some leopards. After your game drive you will leave for Kampala Take a stopover at the BigoBya Mugyenyi and the Equator for a photo opportunity and some demonstrations by a specialized tour guide.

After this head back to Kampala and this will make the end of our Trip
